Thank you

Thank you for all the awesome work you did on FlightPathTV. It is very much appreciated. Navigating my way through all the errors was like trying to read Greek! Kiwimrsmac (talk) 07:30, 30 January 2011 (UTC)KiwimrsmmacKiwimrsmac (talk) 07:30, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Reference formatting

Please remember that, per WP:CITE, reference styles in articles should not be changed from one optional style to another en masse. This includes changing from one column of references to two via AWB. — Carl (CBM · talk) 02:17, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

If you are talking about WP:CITECONSENSUS it does not say "do not pass a column count parameter to the {{Reflist}}" it's saying do not convert <references /> to the template {{Reflist}}, WP:CT, without consensus. I am not doing that. If you are talking about WP:FNNR then, yeah, sorry I merged a few notes and references because they are a mess apart but apparently some folks still insist on having both. --Hutcher (talk) 02:40, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm talking about WP:CITE: "You should follow the style already established in the article you are editing, if it has one." There is no consensus that all articles with some number of references need to have two columns; changing them en masse isn't appropriate. If you continue to change them with AWB, I will take the next step of temporarily removing your AWB access. The AWB rules specifically forbid doing controversial things with it, and making large-scale changes to reference formatting is certainly a controversial change. I notice you even changed the template on articles that don't have footnotes, e.g. [1]. I'm simpy saying you need to get consensus for exactly what changes should be made before going farther with them. — Carl (CBM · talk) 02:50, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm always surprised by the ignorance of some of the people on this thing :S The Third Air Force article already had {{Reflist}} so I'm not sure why you're implying that I'm wildly adding that template. I think it's a misreading of WP:CITECONSENSUS to think a second column (only visible on Firefox) is an insult to the major contributor of the article. Your argument against is weak but if it's so controversial then fine I'll stop, en masse, and if you still feel the need push your weight around, go ahead and pull my access, Carl. --Hutcher (talk) 04:53, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject Anthroponymy

Hello. I noticed all the work you've put into the project recently. Nice job.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 22:37, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

About the templates that are up for deletion, can you add a link to WPAPO:HN somewhere on their pages, so people can figure out how to use them? I only found out by reading your comment in the deletion discussion. I'm not sure how to add to it without screwing up the template.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 23:01, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Another thing, I can't figure out how to get template:aboutgivenname to show a link to a disambig page. I noticed it wasn't listed in the same why the surname one is at WPAPO:HN, does that mean it isn't completed yet?--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 23:22, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Chris-leben-mugshot-pictures.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Chris-leben-mugshot-pictures.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. O Fenian (talk) 14:16, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Manchu family name

Hi --- I reverted your edits to Manchu family name. That article is not about people named Mr. Manchu or Mrs. Manchu; it is about the surnames used by Manchu people, an ethnic group of northeastern China. "Manchu" itself is not one of those surnames. (Similarly, the article Korean family name is not about people named Mr. Korean or Mrs. Korean, and in fact you will not meet any Korean person by that surname). I listed Vishnu Manchu, Lakshmi Manchu, and Manoj Manchu at Manchu (surname); they are all south Indian and have no connection to the Manchu ethnic group in China. Morello family

The Morello crime family article is written without any inline citations, the article mentions 116th St. Mob, but couldn't find 107th St. Mob. In the section Post-Antonio era the name "116th St. Mob" (I changed it to 107th Street) and Morello gang are mentioned. But I couldnt find any other "107th St. Mob" in the article, you mentioned on the talk page. I agree the title 107th has much more references too it then 116th St. does. --Vic49 (talk) 22:58, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject American Old West

It was recently suggested that WikiProject American Old West might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. I have started a discussion on the projects talk page soliciting the opinions of the members of the project if this project would be interested in being supported by WikiProject United States. Please feel free to comment on your opinions about this suggestion. --Kumioko (talk) 19:50, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

When and how to add etymological info to name and disambiguation pages?

Maybe you, as somebody who seems to be active in the Anthroponymy project, can help me out (as a newbie Wikipedia editor) with the following:

I noticed that many name pages and disambiguation pages about names do not contain etymological info about that name, no info about meaning and/or origin. I tried to find some guidelines whether such info is desirable and should be added by someone who can provide it, or whether this is deemed unnecessary or even contra-productive. So far I was not able to find something.

An example: Adela

Would it be a good idea to add some info like the info given here or not? As this is a disambiguation page there is the related question: When is it a good idea to create a "Adela (given name)" page? If there is more than a certain minimum amount of info that can be provided? If the name is above some threshold of popularity?

(And anyway: Was my choice of addressing you and you directly here the right way to deal with my question?) Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rbrunner7 (talkcontribs) 07:12, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Salting the earth

Thanks for your contribution to the Salting the earth article. Your edit summary is "the point of the original practice should be defined for clarity because the old lead seems to imply that there was no original purpose" and your new text is "High levels of soil salinity will degrade a soils ability to produce vegetation, therefore, salting of the earth can be a long lasting method of handicapping a society's ability to support itself with agriculture."

But in fact the article does state the point in the lead: "to symbolize a curse on its re-inhabitation".

Though it is true that high salt levels can hurt agriculture, I don't think anyone believes that the Israelites (or anyone else) transported the necessary thousands of tons of salt to Shechem and spread it on the land; certainly no reliable source I've found claims that. Neither salt nor transportation (presumably by ox cart) was cheap. As the article says, this is a ritual. Salt has many symbolic connotations in the Bible and neither the original source nor any secondary sources say that making the land infertile is the purpose here. It is of course possible that it was a symbol of making the land infertile, but lots of other things are possible as well, and I have not been able to find any reliable sources that are more specific than saying that the purpose was to "consecrate" the city to God. Please read Talk:Salting the earth for more extended discussion. --Macrakis (talk) 17:08, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

I would love to. Any suggestions on performing the ideal split? I imagine that I should first ensure that content in this article pre-exists in the target articles and then request a redirect? --Hutcher (talk) 21:26, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
I hope I havn't offended you, but I decided to sort it out myself, on the grounds that you would be better placed to review and correct my work rather than the other way round. In the end, there was no material that ought to have gone in Carpathian Germans and so it was in effect a merge from Germans in Czechoslovakia (1918–1938) to Sudeten Germans. I am not sure if someone had previously done the split but forgot to remove the split tag. Either way, the merge needed doing otherwise there would be 2 articles with identical scope but diverging in content. Hope this is ok Op47 (talk) 15:25, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of Australian businesspersons, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page South Pacific (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
